R.E.S.C.U.E. Announces 2010 Benjamin B. Stone
Scholarship Awards
R.E.S.C.U.E. (Return Susquehanna Country Under Ecology) is pleased to announce the 2010 recipients of the Benjamin Stone Environmental Scholarships available to graduating seniors in Susquehanna and Wayne Counties. Kelsey Kohrs, a graduate of Honesdale High School in Wayne County, was awarded the $500.00 Scholarship. The R.E.S.C.U.E. Selection Committee was very impressed with her strong interest in wildlife biology backed by her experiences studying Monarch Butterflies and bats. Kelsey is planning to attend Monmouth University in New Jersey to study Environmental Science. Nigel M. Brauser, also a graduate of Honesdale High School, was awarded $250.00. Nigel has also been very dedicated to protecting the environment and to raising awareness of our biosphere. Nigel will be attending Princeton University to become an Engineer. His goal as an Engineer is to make products be more efficient and ecologically friendly. In his acceptance reply, he stated, "As I pursue my future goals, I will try to honor Mr. Stone’s ideals, and strive to preserve the environment." The third winner was Jacob Eastman, who recently graduated from Elk Lake High School in Susquehanna County. Jacob is going to major in Energy Engineering at the Western New England College; he hopes to reduce the costs of windmills and solar panels, which would put many more in usage. All three recipients embrace the ideals of the R.E.S.C.U.E. organization. The Benjamin Stone Scholarship Awards were created in 1999 by R.E.S.C.U.E. to honor Benjamin, an avid environmentalist from Dimock who was President and an active member of R.E.S.C.U.E for over 20 years. The awards are intended to be used for the purchase of college text books. There were many worthy applications received this year; the Selection Committee - Joann Morsch, George Calufut, and Joyce Stone, found that making the final decisions was very challenging. Congratulations to the 2010 Benjamin Stone Scholarship recipients. |
