R.E.S.C.U.E. Announces 2009 Benjamin B. Stone Scholarship Awards R.E.S.C.U.E. (Return Susquehanna Country Under Ecology) is pleased to announce the 2009 recipients of the Benjamin Stone Environmental Scholarships available to graduating seniors in Susquehanna and Wayne Counties.
Carlos A. Cuevas, was presented a check for $500.00 at his recent Susquehanna Community High School graduation ceremony by Board Member, Joyce Stone. The R.E.S.C.U.E. Selection Committee was very impressed with Carlos's significant efforts to voluntarily improve wildlife habitats, including a huge clean-up of litter around the Susquehanna Round House River Park, Food Plots Planting Projects, and several Fish Habitat Improvements. Carlos is planning to attend Paul Smith's College in the Adirondacks where he will major in Wildlife Management and Fisheries Sciences. Sienna George, a graduate of Honesdale High School, was awarded $250.00. Sienna is very concerned about preserving biodiversity and has conducted water quality tests in Dyberry Creek as a project for the Jr. Academy of Science competition. She has participated in several environmental camps including the Northeast PA Audubon Society Hog Island's youth ecology session in Maine. Sienna has been accepted into the Penn State Schreyer Honors College at University Park where she will major in Chemical Engineering. Evan Cook, a Blue Ridge High School graduate, was also awarded $250.00. Evan demonstrated in his application a strong commitment towards protecting our forests, streams and wildlife. Evan also plans to attend the Paul Smith's College in the Adirondacks where he will major in Forestry. The Benjamin Stone Scholarship Awards were created in 1999 by R.E.S.C.U.E. to honor Benjamin, an avid environmentalist from Dimock, who was President and an active member of R.E.S.C.U.E for over 20 years. The awards are intended to be used for the purchase of college text books. The Selection Committee - Joann Morsch, George Calufut, and Joyce Stone appreciated the many fine applications received this year. Congratulations to the recipients in 2009.
