NEW PROBLEMS LOOMING AT LYNCOTT LANDFILL
March 11, 2011

It has come to our attention that a permit application has been submitted to the DEP by a gas company for the purpose of building a road through the Lyncott Landfill in New Milford, Susquehanna County.

You are undoubtedly aware that the Lyncott Landfill contains a vast array of toxic waste products and its wells are tested annually to insure that those toxins are not leaching into the groundwater.

As R.E.S.C.U.E. is one of the parties directly involved with the closure of the Landfill, we believe we should be involved with any decisions that might affect its status and condition. The creation of a roadway in itself would involve massive weights and earth moving, either of which could easily create havoc with the toxins buried there. Further, if the road were to be successfully constructed, the interminable trafficking of heavy equipment would further subject the area to a toxic mishap adversely affecting the water supplies of all area residents.

At this time we have no knowledge of which gas company has made the application, nor where the drilling itself is to take place once the roadway is built, but it will undoubtedly be in that vicinity which would create another unreasonable situation. If drilling is done in the immediate vicinity of the Landfill, we believe that would be an accident just waiting to happen. When it does, we would never be able to prove that it was the drilling process that caused it, because the toxins would be leaching from the landfill.

It is R.E.S.C.U.E.’s contention that to allow any type of activity in or near the landfill without the full agreement of the parties named in the Stipulation of the Parties (the legal document that initiated the water testing at the site) would be irresponsible at best, and possibly illegal.
