R.E.S.C.U.E. is a grassroots, environmental education
and protection organization, originally formed in 1978.
Over the years several chapters have come into existence to fight particular environmental issues.
Today two chapters make up the organization, each working autonomously and covering a particular
area within Susquehanna and Wayne Counties.

What R.E.S.C.U.E. is Doing
- Working with municipalities to create and enlarge Agricultural Security Areas
- Participation in the "Adopt-A-Highway" and
"Adopt-A-Stream" programs
- Ongoing efforts to make environmental issues a priority,
and to provide information on any and all issues
- Ongoing efforts to disseminate information on land use
planning, particularly where the environment is involved
- Specific involvement in nuclear issues, including the
disposition of Low Level Radioactive Waste
- Awarding annual scholarships to six local high school students who
exemplify our guidelines for environmental dedication
- Providing an additional annual scholarship through R.E.S.C.U.E.'S Ben
Stone Scholarship Fund to a deserving area high-school senior, through selection
from applications
- Ongoing efforts to acquire a conservation easement in Wayne or Susquehanna
Counties with funds from our settlement with the Windfarm enterprise in the Moosic Mountains
What R.E.S.C.U.E. Has Accomplished
- Closed two landfills and defeated attempts to reopen them
- Squelched plans to site garbage incinerators and landfills
- Initiated our area's volunteer recycling programs
- Actively participated in developing the Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties'
Solid Waste Plans
- Participated in Pennsylvania "Adopt-A-Highway" program
- Helped stop the siting of a four-state radioactive waste dump in Pennsylvania
- Encouraged participation in the PA Scenic Rivers program
- Worked on upgrading stream designations to recognize and maintain
today's water quality
- Developed legislation requiring better control and handling of roadside
herbicide and pesticide spray programs
- Participated in Pennsylvania's "Adopt-A-Stream" program
- Initiated area-wide adoption of Nuclear Free Resolutions at municipal
and county levels
